Travel Guide by Car:
- Coming from the United States, through Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan/Ontario border into Canada. From there it is only 190 miles, about four hours. There is one of three ways that you can travel: Hwy 17 east to Thessalon then north on Hwy 129 to Chapleau; Hwy 17 west to Wawa, then Hwy 101 east to Chapleau; or Hwy 17 west to Hwy 556 (Ranger Lake Road) to Hwy 129 north to Chapleau. (This route has about 50 miles of gravel, and is a little shorter than the other two routes). All routes are very scenic and I recommend that you travel one on the way in and another on the way home.
- Coming from southern Ontario/Buffalo Boarder there are two different routes, directions from Sudbury are: Hwy 17 west to the town of Thessalon, then north on Hwy 129 to Chapleau. The second route: Hwy 17 west to Hwy 144 north to Sultan Road. Turn west on Sultan Road to Hwy 667 then north on Hwy 129 to Chapleau. (This route has about 50 miles of gravel along the first part of the Sultan Road. It is about one hour faster than Route 1.
- For those of you staying at Kanipahow Resort coming from the south west take Hwy. 101 east for 7 KM (3 miles) to Kanipahow Rd. and turn left. For those of you coming from the east we are 7 KM from the 101 and 129 Junction. If you come to the 101 gas station you have gone too far. Turn right on Kanipahow Rd. We are approximately 4 km (2 miles) in. Watch for Hwy signs. Please keep in mind that we are east of the Town Of Chapleau off of Hwy 101.

Cabin Guide Lines for our outpost camps
I would once again like to thank you for choosing Kanipahow Resort & Outpost Camps. My goal is to make your stay as comfortable and as memorable as possible. There is a journey logbook left in the cabin for your comments. If you have any pictures that you would like to share with us we would be happy to add them to the collection of pictures already on our web site.
In order to maintain the quality of our fishing resource & promote higher trophy opportunities for our Sport Fishing quests, Kanipahow Resort & Outpost Camps promotes conservation fishing, returning the larger trophy spawning fish back in the water. We like to call this C.P.R. Catch, Picture and Release. Proper handling and release techniques will improve fish survival; enjoy all the smaller fish for your shore lunches, they are the best eating. For all trophy fish, get a nice horizontal picture, get the weight and length and have a replica made when you get home. This practice will help ensure great fishing for the next generations to come. And for the next time you return.
Please leave the cabin as you found it. It is each group’s responsibility to sweep and mop floor and give the inside of the refrigerator a cleaning if required. Refill wood box for the next group. Do not leave any food of any type behind. If you brought it in you must take any unused food out. No one will use any food you leave behind.
Burn any combustibles, garbage in the wood stove or in fire pit outside and double bag the remaining. We have found in the past that if the garbage is not doubled bagged it will leak all over your clothes bags on the return flight, leaving an awful smell to deal with on the way home. You can be sure the pilot will not allow it to leak onto his airplane. For all our beer drinkers, flatten all beer cans and double bag as well.
Some of our Outpost Camps appliances and lighting run on propane gas only so we ask the you leave a window open 1” at all times, this will ensure that carbon monoxide will not be allowed to build up should an appliance malfunction for any reason. Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors have been placed in the cabins for your protection. Please check to see that they are working and please do not remove any of the batteries for any reason.
All our cabins have 12 volt electric water pumps. The battery is recharged by solar power so please be considerate of this. Do not run the pump for extended periods of time unnecessarily. By doing this it will ensure you and the next group will have continual running water during your stay.
When lighting propane lights hold match 3 inches below mantel and wait for gas to come out. Do not touch mantel with match or it will break. It is only ash. Ensure all propane lights and burners are off while out fishing.
There is a Konk sprayer in each cabin. It is in the white plastic container hung on the upper part of the wall. They spray a mist out every 7.5 minutes. This kills all flying insects on a continual basis. It can be turned on or off, it is your decision. A refill will be left in the cabin. Please feel free to change it when the old one runs out.
Clean fish at fish cleaning station. Not in the cabins. Dispose of fish guts down the lake on the far shore immediately afterwards. This will help to eliminate bear and mostly skunk encounters around cabin.
Firewood has been cut and left along the shoreline or out back of cabins for your use. Look for orange flagging tape hanging from the trees along shore line. It is each group’s responsibility to refill the wood box in the cabin.
For your outdoor fires, keep a small controllable fire, no large fires that could get out of control. Fires are allowed two hours before sun set until two hours after sun rise. Do not burn if wind is up. Keep a pail of water handy at all times. Rakes are left at the cabin to rake area around fire pit. Make sure all fires are put out before going to bed. If the wind comes up in the night it can cause a forest fire. You are responsible for the care and control of your fires. Obey all Fire Bans.
All boats are to be returned to boat ramps. Motors completely up in the lock position. Pull boats right up so that stern of boat is out of the water and remove plugs so that they do not fill up with rain water. Tie all boats to the boat ramps so they will not float away. This means you will have to put the plugs in before launching boats.
Put all remaining gas back in boats with vent caps left open at the end of your stay. This helps keep the bears from carrying off the gas cans. Do not leave gas can with their caps off. This allows water and dirt to contaminate the fuel thus causing engine problems.
We do not mark the rocks. So while on the water, keep in mind that there could be rocks just under the surface. Take your time and learn the lake before going fast. You will be responsible for any damage to the motors.
When starting motors, check to see that water is pumping out the back of motor. This is the cooling system; if it is not pumping water turn off motor and use spare.
Before reaching the shore turn off and lift motor so not to hit rocks or suck sand into the water pump.
For our early spring or late fall groups, allow lower unit to sit in water for 5 minutes before starting motors. This only needs to be done if freezing conditions exist.
Make sure motors are filled with fuel each time you go out.
If you take a motor to one of our portage lakes you are required to bring it back: if it is not brought back, a $600.00 charge will be added to the visa bill of the person booking trip. Return all boats on portage lakes back to where they were, (ABOVE HIGH WATER LINE).
Safety kits (orange plastic sealed container) are in all boats for your safety. If they are not in the boat it is your responsibility to see that they are. They are checked each spring by our staff to ensure everything that is required to be in them is there. DO NOT OPEN THESE CONTAINERS UNLESS IT IS A EMERGENCY. Life vests are supplied for adults only. Life vest must be in the boats at all times
For all our fly-in guests be ready to depart at 7:30 am, remain ready even if the weather is out. Pilot could show at any time right up to 1 hour before dark and will have no time to wait for you to repack. If for any reason we do not get you out on your departure day. We will contact family members and let them know the situation. You will be the first to be picked up the next morning. Be ready for a 6:00 am flight.
Thank you and enjoy your stay.
